What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic sleep condition where breathing is affected and significantly disrupts sleep. With this condition, breathing repeatedly stop and starts, sometimes for 10 seconds or more while sleeping. The statistics in the U.S suggest that 20 -30 million people are affected, with the majority neither diagnosed nor treated.

OSA Causes

The most common causes are when the tongue falls back down the throat, narrow airways limit or stop air from flowing normally or excessive fatty tissue gets in the way.

Other causes:

  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Physical malformation that blocks the airways
  • Low muscle tone (causing the soft tissue to slide back into the throat obstructing the airways)
Symptoms and Risks Associate with OSA

The most common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea is excessively noisy persistent snoring. This type of snoring is identifiable due to extended periods of silence when breathing is disrupted fully.

  • Chest pain

  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Increased risk of motor vehicle accidents
  • Increased risk of workplace accidents
  • The most extreme symptom –
This condition will manifest differently in adults and children. Adults tend to experience excessive tiredness, which can result in falling asleep at random times. Children experience hypertension, malnutrition, and failure to thrive.

Treatment Options

Lifestyle changes are recommended, reducing the use of alcohol or other drugs (both illicit and sedative prescriptions), weight loss, increased exercise and improved nutrition.

Dr. Martin Blankenship D.C. at Family Chiropractic Plus, St Petersburg FL. practices a technique called Nasal Specific. This is a form of physical medicine that gets results. Dr. Blankenship has been practicing Nasal Specific since 1995. He has seen patient’s sinus problems resolve, allergies resolve, and snoring go away. Patients have had their sense of smell return, unresolvable headaches stop, inability to equalize pressure in the ears go away and more.

Sinus cavities drain into the nose and back of the throat. The function of a sinus is to drain! That’s what they are supposed to do. For whatever reason the small holes that allow them to drain can close which can cause a multitude of problems. When your sinuses don’t work properly they can cause, obstructive Sleep Apnea, headaches/migraines, snoring, breathing problems, sinusitis, allergies and abject misery.

What is Nasal Specific? A technique that goes into the nose (nasal passages) and manipulates the bones that surround the sinus cavities. This allows the sinuses to do their job and drain.

How long does it take? The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes the first time and less time thereafter.

How quickly can you get results? Many patients get at least some results immediately. It’s not a cure for everyone but you will know within a very short time if Nasal Specific will benefit you.

What if I’ve already had surgery on my nose? Many patients come to the chiropractor for Nasal Specific after experiencing their problems for a long time. Many of them have had multiple surgeries to widen and open the sinus passages. While this may address the symptoms of sinus problems, it never addresses what’s causing the sinus passages to narrow.
