Active Mind, Active Body, Active Home

Oct 14, 2020

As we spend more time at home, it is important to prioritize our mental health and wellbeing. Here are some tips to help us all stay healthy, fit, and active.

1. START A REGULAR ROUTINE

Just because the normal daily routine has changed does not mean they are completely gone. It is important to set up a routine that creates active alternatives to the new normal.

You can fall asleep all day but resist this desire. A key part of maintaining good sleep health is going to bed at about the same time every day. Prepare a balanced breakfast every morning, take a shower, and stop wearing sleepwear all day long. Find a daily routine that you can maintain to stay positive and alive.

2. EAT A HEALTHY BALANCED DIET

It could be difficult to continue eating a balanced diet when your routine has changed, especially if you are staying home all day. Whenever possible, do your best to maintain a balanced and healthy diet, eat at regular time intervals, and stay hydrated!

Nutrition is vital for combating stress.  Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that work to neutralize molecules produced when the body is stressed.

3. TRY STRETCHES EVEN AT HOME

Just because you are not in a standard routine does not mean you should give up the stretches! Set a reminder on your phone so you can get up and stretch every hour - when awake. This will help you prevent muscular and joint stiffness, maintain blood flow, and stop making permanent indention on your furniture.

This is also a great time to participate in daily yoga or stretching exercises. You can also get recommendations from your chiropractor or research to find a routine that fits your goals and level of activity. Even if it only takes a short time to stretch, it is better than sitting all day.

4. GET SOME REGULAR EXERCISE

You don't need a gym and making time to get into shape doesn’t need to be complicated. Making a workout plan to keep your body fit and healthy could be walking each day and yoga. Your chiropractor can also suggest a great home workout program. Health and fitness experts are sharing more exercises than ever. Searches online for equipment-free workouts, you'll find a variety of articles and YouTube videos detailing what exercise to try and how to do it - all for free!

5. TIME TO FIND SOME ACTIVE HOBBY

With all the world’s stress at the moment, it seems like a reasonable idea to find a relaxing hobby. It can give you peace of mind amid the storm and even help with your mental health. You know that you’re always telling yourself about that hobby to try – only if you can find the time. Well, now's the time! Hobbies that get you moving are especially important, even if they are very small movements like knitting, which are ideal for arthritis and agility. You can also try:

  • Baking
  • Pottery
  • Sewing
  • Cross-stitching
  • Puzzles
  • Music-making
  • Bird Watching

THE MENTAL & PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF STAYING ACTIVE

Chiropractic Sooths  the Nervous System

Stress can result in joint-pain, muscle tightness, headaches, fatigue. Stress also lowers the immune system, leaving the body vulnerable to illness and dis-ease. Chiropractic treatment helps relieve these symptoms, restoring the body to optimum health. In addition, regular adjustments will soothe the nervous system and reduce the bodies flight and fight response.

Healthy physical activity can improve memory, concentration, mood and relieves anxiety. Physical activity has a positive impact on your physiological, mental, and emotional health and directly affects:

  • Mental Health
  • Psychological well-being
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Blood pressure
  • Obesity

The Takeaway

Spending a lot of time at home may seem daunting, but with the right attitude, you can use it as an opportunity to explore new hobbies and healthy habits that you didn't have time to do before. An active mind and body is a healthy mind and body, and your health is more important than ever!
