Chronic Pain and Treatment

Oct 24, 2019

The treatments for chronic pain are as diverse as the causes. From Doctor prescribed prescription drugs to Chiropractic care, there are a lot of approaches. Read below to learn how to address and treat your pain conditions.

The pain people experience is an unpleasant sensation that's linked to your tissue damage. Pains purpose is to tell the body how to react and prevent further tissue damage.

Your experience of pain will be different from others, and there are many ways you'll describe the feeling of pain. Since it's different from person to person it's very difficult for Doctors to define and treat the root cause.

We see different types of pain that stay in one place or can even spread around your body.

Causes of pain

Your body has special nerves that detect tissue damage, it will then send frequent signals to your brain that transmit the information about the damage. The nerves are called nociceptors and are transmitted along the spinal cord. After the signals are sent to the brain it will decide what to do about the pain.

If you touch hot surfaces you'll receive a message through your spinal cord that will cause contraction of the muscles and will pull your hand away from the hot surface. This will happen so fast that the message won't even reach the brain before you pull away. The message will continue traveling to the brain and will cause a sensation of pain to be felt after you touched the hot surface.

Types of pain

Chronic pain is a type of pain that can be mild or severe and can even be a continuous type of pain like migraines and arthritis. Intermittent pain occurs on a continual occasion but will stop in between.

There's another type of pain called acute pain and is intense and very short-lived. Your body will alert you of an injury or localized tissue damage. You'll need to be treated for the underlying injury to resolve acute pain.

There are three types of acute pain:
  • Visceral pain
  • Somatic pain
  • Referred pain
These will result in faster heartbeats, breathing and other symptoms letting you know you're injured.
