How Proper Hip Rotation Helps Lower Back & Leads to a Better Golf

May 26, 2021

Hip rotation is a significant part of your golf swing. Your hips work together with various other body parts to create a good rhythm and tempo. The hips help make power, control accuracy and maintain the shape of the club's surface.

Failure to rotate your hips properly can pull or push the ball and inconsistent strikes on the club.

You must rotate your hips continuously throughout the entire swing. To do this, avoid swaying your hips to help your lower back.

It’s imperative to have mobile hips to allow maximum internal & external rotation to produce power & reduce the amount of pressure on your lower back!

Rotate your Hips – Stop Swaying in the Golf Swing

Turn, don't slide. Swaying your hips is far from rotating them. It's something you shouldn't do because it creates weird tilts in the spine.

It prevents you from rotating fully during the downswing and results in over-the-top shots.

You want stability in the lower back, and swaying deviates from that.

What Can Happen as a Result of Decreased Hip Rotation?

The average golfers underestimates the significance of hip rotation in the golf swing.

It is hard to achieve steady speed and consistent ball striking without using the hips correctly. However, most golfers focus their training efforts elsewhere.

This reduced hip rotation not only adversely affects swing tempo but also negatively affects your lower back over time.

Fast Fact:

Research studies evaluate that out of 30 million golfers in the United States, over 80% suffer from back pain.

Although this sport is fun, swinging at a golf ball repetitively can put the body in an uncomfortable position and be easily injured.

How to Fix Hip Rotation While Protecting Your Lower Back?

Moving your hips is incredibly important for the golf swing and many other physical activities.

  • Yoga
Yoga is one of the most effective forms of exercise to help hip tightness. Yoga can bring a wide range of benefits to the hips and lower back for a prolonged period by applying static stretch holds. It relaxes the muscles around the hip joint and provides greater mobility in the golf swing.

  • Strengthening Exercises
These exercises should be added for glutes to help stabilize the hip joint and generate more power in the golf swing.
  • Foam Rolling
Foam rolling can also be performed for glutes, quads, hamstrings, and hip flexors to break up lumps and scar tissue formed on the muscles over time and affect mobility.
  • Frankenstein Walk
This exercise also works the hips, quadriceps, and hamstrings. It helps increase the range of motion. Maintain a good posture, avoid bending your waist, and speed up as you move forward.
  • Hip Rotators - 90/90 Position
It's a great combination of movement and stability. The 90/90 position involves both inward and outward rotation of the hips, and both movements can help improve the squat.

  • Clamshell Exercise
This exercise can build strength in thighs, hips and glutes. It also stabilizes your pelvic muscles and reduces tension in your lower back, preventing overuse and injury.
  • Goblet Squats
It is easy for any golfer to perform goblet squats to help with glute strength. To perform the movement, you need a kettlebell or dumbbell. A suitable weight to start with is 25 lbs.

  • Hip Circles
Hip circles can increase stability and flexibility. For more help, use a stable object for support.

We hope that these workouts will help you maintain lifelong mobility and prevent disability.

Hip Rotation in Golf Swing - Takeaway

The golf swing always necessitates a solid foundation to be flexible and robust.

If any area lacks a proper movement pattern, it's essential to fix it before bad things start happening.

Because there is nothing worse than compensation for the golf swing, the only specific results are bad scores and lower back pain.
