How to Avoid Dehydration in Summer

Mar 25, 2022

Our body is 85% water. In summers, there’s a decline in the body fluids due to sweating and excretion of water to normalise the body temperature.

It is important to keep your body hydrated especially in summers to avoid severe problems like kidney stones, urinary tract infection and prolonged effect of these disorders can ultimately cause kidney failure.

But is drinking water the only way one can keep hydrated? Not necessarily

In this blog post, we’ll talk about the solid and fluid intakes other than water, that can keep us hydrated in summers.

Fruits

All fruits have variable quantities of water in them. Taking in excessive amounts of seasonal fruits in summers can help combat dehydration in a better way.

A few fruits are especially known for being rich in water content. A few of them include:

Watermelons

  • Watermelons are 92% water. It is the most hydrating food you can have. In summers, it is ideal to eat watermelons to keep your body fluids balanced.
  • Watermelons are rich in antioxidants, especially lycopene, which makes it more beneficial as these antioxidants can prevent oxidative damage to the cell.

Strawberries

  • Strawberries are also rich in water. About 91% of its content is water, making it a hydrating food, ideal for summers.
  • Furthermore, strawberries are known to be rich in fibres,  minerals, and vitamins, mainly vitamin C and manganese.

Cantelope

  • In the category of melons, after watermelon if there’s something hydrating, it’s cantaloupe.
  • About 90% of its content is water, and its nutritious concentration can help your body combat dehydration in summers.
  • One cup of cantaloupe contains 2 grams of fibres and along with water, this mixture is very beneficial to promote appetite and fullness.

Peaches

  • About 89% of peach’s content is water, making it a very beneficial food for summers.
  • It is also rich in vitamins A and C and minerals such as potassium, which can fill in for the loss of minerals and electrolytes during sweating.

Vegetables

Just like fruits, vegetables are also known to have high quantities of water.

However, the majority of vegetables lose their fluid quantity while being cooked.

But there are many vegetables that are rich in water content and can be eaten raw, like:

Cucumber

  • Cucumber is the most hydrating food one can have in summers.
  • It has about 95% water in them, and the consumption of cucumbers in summers works like an alternative of water.
  • Cucumbers have very low levels of calories, it makes each serving of cucumber very light and refreshing.

Lettuce

  • Most of the green leafy vegetables are rich in water quantity. Lettuce is 96% water and with addition to that, it also has 5% of total folate.
  • Folate is useful for preventing neural tube birth defects in pregnant women.

Zucchini or Courgette

  • Courgette is also a water rich vegetable, consisting of almost 94% water content. As a result of the high water content, courgette is low in calories.
  • Courgette is also rich in vitamin C, making it beneficial for the defence of the body.

Caffeinated Drinks

  • Drinks that are high in caffeine, like tea, coffee and soda can also contribute to your daily water intake.
  • Limited and controlled amount of caffeine (about 350 grams of it daily) doesn’t harm the body. Infact, it is beneficial for many causes. One of them is hydration of the body.
  • It is important to be careful with caffeine. Large quantities of caffeine in a diet can give birth to other problems.

Takeaways

  • In summers, increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables can foster water loss in the body.
  • Fruites, especially watermelons, strawberries, peaches etc have high water content in them, and their intake in summers can be beneficial to compensate for water deficiency.
  • Vegetables like cucumber, lettuce, courgette etc have raised water quantity and eating them raw can be helpful for osmoregulation.
  • Caffeine drinks, when used in calculated amounts, are also beneficial for water balance.
