Smart Healthy Snack Choices For Boosting Energy

Jun 23, 2020
Even though we are slowly starting to emerge more, a huge downside of being sheltered in our homes during this pandemic is the constant nagging feeling of fatigue or the need to snack due to boredom. It is too easy to just sit on the couch, pop on a good show, and open a bag of chips.

However, now more then ever, it is important for our minds and body to stay active and eat wisely. Choosing snacks that give us energy and drive is half of the battle, consider these snacks as you search for fuel the next time you are bored or hungry!

Smart Healthy Snack Choices For Boosting Energy

  • Trail Mix. A third-cup of trail mix that contains a combination of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, or dark chocolate chips delivers a crunchy combo of sweet and savory that delivers on healthy fats, fiber, and protein. A snack bar made of nuts or seeds is also a great option.
  • Roasted apples. Satisfy your sweet tooth cravings by pairing some low-calorie vanilla yogurt with roasted apples. It's a light snack that will fill you up, tastes great, and is just like dessert.
  • Roasted Broccoli–Artichoke Dip. Grab your favorite veggies or whole-grain crackers and dip them into this creamy artichoke dip. It's only 25 calories per 1/4 cup, so you can munch away free of guilt.
  • Hummus. Hummus is a dip made from mashed chickpeas, tahini (sesame seed paste), vegetable oil (unsaturated fat), and lemon juice, which provides low-glycemic carbohydrates that give a sustained energy release, rather than a quick burst. This can easily be used to dip with either vegetable sticks or crackers and also is a great on the go snack you can eat while at work.
  • Berries And Cheese. Berries are full of fiber and are a great choice when craving something sweet. Pair them with low-fat string cheese for even more energy and protein that will help you stay satisfied longer.
  • Healthy Smoothie. One of the great things about smoothies is that you can combine some of your favorite things and change them up each time depending on your mood or craving. Choosing to use dark leafy greens, berries, different kinds of nut butter, or chia seeds in your smoothie will make it more nutrient-dense while giving you a great energy boost and keep you full longer.
  • Avocado. Avocados are a great snack that can keep you feeling energized as they are full of healthy fats, which have been shown to enhance the way your body absorbs nutrients and can also be stored by your body to be used as energy sources. The fiber in avocados helps maintain steady energy levels longer. Add a bit of lime juice and some pepper for flavor.
  • Celery Sticks With Cream Cheese Or Nut Butter. Celery is remarkable in that the calories that you spend chewing and digesting a piece of raw celery are equal to the calories that you gain from eating it! Adding a bit of cream cheese or nut butter will provide energy-packed protein and some flavor.
  • Yogurt With Granola. This a great combination that provides that magic carb-protein combo that will kick your energy back in gear. Use only a small amount of granola as it can be higher in sugar. As for the yogurt, select low-fat options with less than 20 grams of sugar per cup. Another great option is to use plain yogurt and flavor it with a natural sweetener, such as honey.

The Takeaway

Times have been different and difficult for most of us these days. It is important to remember that snacking isn't a bad thing, or a lack of willpower but rather a smart strategy for fueling your brain and body for an energy-filled day.  The key is choosing wisely to make sure those snacks are giving you the boost you need.
