The Benefits Of Positive Thinking

Feb 23, 2020
Whether it's from our phones, TV screens or our social media feeds, nowadays negativity seems to be everywhere we look. Sometimes, negativity starts with the thoughts we generate in our heads, creating a negative outlook on everything. No matter where it comes from, negativity can feel unavoidable, leaving you feeling uncertain and miserable. However, feeling this way is unnecessary when you can reap the benefits of positive thinking.

The Benefits Of Positive Thinking
  • Stress Relief. Those who think more positively are able to cope with stressful situations more effectively than those who think negatively. In one study, researchers found that when optimistic thinkers encounter disappointment in either their professional or personal life, they are more likely to focus on finding a solution. However, pessimistic thinkers most likely assume that there is no solution, leading them to do nothing to change it.
  • Stronger Immune System. It's proven that your mind affects your body, whether it is in a positive way or a negative way. In one study, researchers found that when negative emotions are activated in different areas in the brain, a weaker immune response to a flu vaccine was the result. It was also found that people who thought positively about a specific part of their lives, such as how well they were performing in a certain sport, were able to enjoy the benefits of a stronger immune response than a person who typically has a negative outlook on specific parts of their lives.
  • Lower Cholesterol. Unfortunately, high cholesterol is an issue for a large portion of Americans. It's true that diet and exercise are a great way to lower your cholesterol, but did you know that by simply being optimistic, you can lower your cholesterol? It's true and so simple everyone can enjoy this healthy benefit.
  • Healthy Relationships. Those who think more optimistically and keep an open mind are able to make a better first impression on others, making them capable of not just having a lot of friends but friends that play a positive role in their life. Naturally, people usually are attracted to optimistic thinkers as their happiness is often times contagious, leading them to acquire a very active social life.
4 Ways to Achieve a Positive Mindset
  1. Avoid Talking Negatively About Yourself.  Self-talk involves what you are mentally telling yourself. This is the voice inside your mind that closely analyzes everything you do, from how well or how poorly you perform in a certain situation to how you interact with your environment and with others. If that voice is only focused on negative thoughts, you will develop a negative self-image. However, this unhealthy pattern can, thankfully, be broken. One way to break the pattern is to pay close attention to when negative thoughts creep up on you and then take the initiative to create more positive thoughts. Paying attention to your inner voice and how you talk to yourself is a big step toward thinking more positively, as it allows you to start making healthy changes in your thought patterns and gain a more optimistic view of your own behaviors, thus breaking the pattern.
  2. Let Failures Be Lessons Learned. Nobody is perfect, so you shouldn't expect yourself to be. You will inevitably make mistakes and have shortcomings, just like everyone else, whether they want to admit it or not. When shortcomings occur, turn your focus from how you failed on to how you can do better next time you face a similar situation. In other words, learn from your failures as you can use those lessons throughout the rest of your life. This skill will surely set you up for future successes.
  3. Surround Yourself With Positive People. When you surround yourself with positive people their positivity will rub off on you, and vice versa. Think of this as a chain reaction. The positive outlooks that others possess will affect your thinking in a positive way, leading your outlook to similarly contribute to others that have a place in your life. If you do what you can to think positively and let your happiness rub off on others, their positivity will affect you in the same way. Simply put, when you practice positivity, there are great benefits to reap in return.
  4. Don't Forget to be Thankful. There is always a ton of things to be upset about, especially when we are in a search for things to be angry about. Sometimes, when we get ourselves in an unhappy funk, it can be hard to get ourselves out of it. However, it is entirely up to us what we want to focus on. Practicing gratitude is one way to train your brain to focus on the positive things in life. Gratitude allows us to feel and express how thankful we are for the positive aspects of our lives, such as people, successes, and experiences. When we practice gratitude for even the little things in our day-to-day lives, we are able to find purpose and satisfaction in our lives.
The Takeaway

There are plenty of health and personal benefits that come with having a positive outlook, however, it is the way you go about achieving this mindset that you should consider. It's normal to be sad sometimes, it's inevitable. But, adopting a positive mindset is critical for opening your mind to appreciate the big and little things in life.
