CHRONIC AND REFERRAL PAIN

Nov 04, 2022

Living a full life sometimes requires risk and pain! Pain is an important communication tool; it tells the body that something isn’t right. If we can learn to listen to our bodies, we might avoid pain and injury!

The number of people living in chronic pain is incredible, it’s estimated that 50.2 million (20.5%) adults in American reported experiencing pain daily.

“Chronic pain is associated with reduced quality of life, increased medical expenditures, and significant economic costs. Chronic pain is among the most common chronic conditions in the United States.”

Chronic pain when experienced regularly can become normalized. The reality is that chronic pain will affect metal health, employment, relationships, happiness and overall health.

Today we are going to discuss referral pain and why seeing an expert to assess referral pain can uncover the origin of chronic pain.

Referral Pain – What is it?

Referral pain put simply is pain in an area of your body that is a direct result of another injury in a different part of the body. An example is Cervical (neck) pain which can present as TMJ (Jaw pain), shoulder pain, arm pain or tingling and numbness, often experienced in the hands or fingers. The most well known instances of referral pain is pain in the left arm that could be a heart attack.

Although pain is a normal part of life, it isn’t something to be ignored and should be examined by a chiropractic physician. This article concentrates on educating you that not all pain is equal and it’s important to get to the origin of the problem.

Why?

Angry nerves send electrical impulses through cells into the brain, spinal cord, organs and the central nervous system. The complexity of our brain and body means we are often oblivious to those messages and yet others are obvious like pain! Referral pain occurs because nerves are all connected. When the nerve sends electrical impulses to the brain, it interprets this and can perceive the problems to lie anywhere along the distribution of the nerve.

Options?

As discussed, when you experience pain, something isn’t right. Pain is usually the last symptom to appear, and happily, usually the first to disappear. In most cases, a chiropractic physician needs to assess and treat referred pain. Your chiropractor will be able to identify where the pain is coming from and address the affected area.

When you’re experiencing pain within the body, chiropractors are a great resource. They can evaluate the pain, its source, and give an action plan, whether it be chiropractic care or referrals for additional testing or other professionals.

Start listening to your body. Understand that sometimes the pain can be indicative of more.

End Note

If you suspect you have a referred pain, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. The sooner you treat, the quicker your symptoms will subside.
