The sacroiliac (SI) joint is a substantial joint at the base of your spine, between your sacrum and pelvis. Sacroiliac joint problems can cause different type of pain like low back pain. The pain is often felt in the buttock, the thigh or groin and can travel down the legs into the calf.
The cause of sacroiliac pain is not always clear, it can be trauma from a motor vehicle accident or a personal injury (falling, cycling, workplace accident etc.). Osteoarthritis being a gradual wearing out process can affect the sacroiliac joints, as can ankylosing spondylitis resulting in inflammation and fusion of the sacroiliac joint. In extraordinary cases an infection can affect the joint as could general inflammation, and even pregnancy can take a toll on this area.
Common symptoms include local sacroiliac pain or could be weakness or clumsiness in one or both legs. Often the pain is described as starting in the lumbar and buttock region and radiating to the hip, groin and thighs. Tingling and numbness in the legs or feet can also be a result of sacroiliac conditions.
When a chiropractor cares for sacroiliac pain it usually involves chiropractic adjustments, massage, physical therapy and/or electrical modalities. The adjustments will help reduce pain and increase the range of motion. Also, the adjustment will help improve any communication issues between brain and the body. The chiropractor will provide lifestyle modifications such as ergonomic workstation improvements, nutritional support, exercise or stretching to avoid irritating the S.I joint and strengthening the area to minimize re-injury.
If you suspect you have a sacroiliac joint condition, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. The sooner you treat, the quicker your symptoms will subside.
