Tips To Maintain Physical And Mental Well-Being During These Trying Times

Apr 21, 2020
It is safe to say that the barrage of constant news updates about the coronavirus can be depressing, unsettling, even destabilizing. Now more than ever, it's important to prioritize self-care and take the necessary steps to maintain mental, emotional, and physical health and remain attached to a sense of community.

Thankfully, there are ways to combat the feeling that you have lost control and are feeling gloomy.  While times are unlike anything we have experienced before and options are limited, there are still some ways to keep positive mental health even while you're social distancing.

Tips To Maintain Physical And Mental Well-Being During These Trying Times

  1. Stay Connected. It's crucial to remain in close contact with your family and loved ones outside your home and thankfully we have the technology these days to make that happen. Embrace what is available and email, text, call and video-chat those that mean the most to you. This will help you avoid feeling isolated and disconnected especially if you take the time to discuss other topics besides the pandemic. The key is to stay positive and to lift each other up as best as possible during these difficult times and your mental well-being depends on it.
  2. Exercise. It's a proven fact that physical activity has a huge impact on your psychological well-being. Even better to take the activity outdoors when possible. Exercise happens to release chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin that improve your mood. Getting some fresh air and letting your body absorb some sunlight and make vitamin D is also a great way to lift your spirits!
  3. Distract Yourself. Don't be afraid to find an activity to distract yourself with something different such as coloring, a new craft, baking or listening to your favorite tunes. These distractions are important in order to reduce stress, which in turn can boost your immune system. Not only will you feel better emotionally but your body will be stronger and able to fight off and invaders to your immune system. By adding these fun activities to your schedule, you will have something to look forward to and this can also improve your mood.
  4. Avoid Prolonged Exposure To The Media. It is crucial to stay informed on the ever-changing updates and regulations regarding this pandemic, however, too much exposure can be detrimental to your mental health. Choose to keep track of only reliable sources that you trust and limit the time you spend viewing the information. Emotional and mental health will only suffer from extended exposure to the broadcast of trauma triggering feelings of anxiety, restlessness, helplessness, stress.
  5. Practice Gratitude. Studies have shown that by taking the time to count your blessings, as opposed to your burdens, you can receive a 25% boost in happiness. Just a few moments to write in a journal or share with someone else all that you are grateful for will make you more focused on positive things. As a bonus, you may find more self-esteem and even improved sleep!
  6. Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle. If you took the new fears and stress we are experiencing out of the equation, proper sleep, good nutrition, and exercise have all been important cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. This is more important than ever during these trying times! Keep your body strong and healthy by choosing to get enough sleep, eat a balanced healthy diet and practice a regular exercise routine daily.

The Takeaway

Take the time for self-care during these difficult and uncertain times in order to keep your mental health a top priority. These proactive measures will help you avoid falling into despair and depression.
